A 56-year-old Orthodox rabbi from Far Rockaway, New York has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a young boy between November 2009 and May 2010 at the Hebrew Academy of Nassau County in West Hempstead, several local media outlets reported this morning.
Rabbi Gary Lieberman allegedly abused the boy – who was 10-years-old when the abuse began – in a second floor learning center at the Modern Orthodox day school and in a school bathroom.
He is charged with two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and is scheduled to be arraigned today.
The school’s chairman of the board of education reported the incident to police, leading to a Special Victims Squad investigation and the arrest.
It is unclear how the school first found out about the abuse or when it was first knew.
Lieberman was fired August 31, but may have continued teaching at other Jewish day schools and or yeshivas until his arrest, police reportedly said.
Lieberman allegedly told the boy that it would be futile to tell anyone about the abuse because, Lieberman allegedly said, no one would believe him because I’m a rabbi.
Anyone with information on additional victims has been asked to contact the police Special Victims Squad at 516-573-4022.
