Agudath Israel of America and Torah Umesorah, the National Society for Hebrew Day Schools Publicize Their Official Policy on Dealing With Sexual Abuse:
Sexual Abuse Cases Must Be Reported to Rabbis

Suffering in Silence

September 1, 2010

Dear Friend,

Earlier this year SFJ was contacted by Tara Rosenblum, a news anchor at News 12 who was looking for an Orthodox abuse story in her region that she could do an investigative report on. Shlomo Weiss had been trying to publicize his story in order to alert others in the Chasidic village of Kiryas Joel (in Monroe, Orange County, New York) about the danger his father, for decades a school bus driver, presented to the community and his family.  Shlomo worked together with SFJ and News 12 to produce the report that aired last night.  Be forewarned that Shlomo's story of abuse and cover-up is not easy to watch. We thank Shlomo for his courage and Tara and News 12 for their professionalism in bringing this story to light and hope it will help prevent future tragedies of this nature.

In the words of Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis "Publicity is justly commended as a remedy for social and industrial diseases. Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants."

Established halacha (Jewish Law) places a pedophile in the category of rodef (an imminent threat), in part due to a recidivism rate well in excess of 50-percent. In his 2004 psak (ruling) on this issue, Rabbi Shalom Elyashiv writes that one should report those who sexually abuse children directly to the police and that doing so is of benefit to society.
